Comments from the 2009 EAC People's Choice Award

Fantastic detail and depth to the picture - powerfully evoking an era before my time but making it come so alive

Pippa Gray (29/11/2009)

A very powerful image, with lots of interesting detail to browse time after time. I can almost taste the sulphur in the air. I like the humour of the man at the bus stop!

Lynn Bindman (24/11/2009)

Brilliant - so real with an artistic interpretation with the subject an insignificant figure in the totality of the whole.   Congratulations

Patrick Horn (23/11/2009)

Wonderful - you can almost taste the smoke and the weather

kath murton (18/11/2009)

The work of this artist has so much depth. Every time I look at this painting I see something different. Excellent! Great talent! Valerie Mair 15/11/2009

Amazing detail, it reminds me of a cold damp day and a man is wondering where on earth is the bus?? Lily Russell aged 11

I've been trying to find paintings that conjure up Yorkshire and finally have found one. I'm so excited by this artist and his ability to capture the feelings and atmosphere of this time and place.

Katharine Melville Wright (16/11/2009)

A wonderful piece that tells a story - I love the atmosphere and can hear the drizzle and sense the wet and smokey air of this industrial landscape. I find myself hoping the man can get there in the end. Barbara Exeter

Barbara Blakemore (12/11/2009)

A wonderful painting which for me brings back such fond memories of my childhood in Yorkshire.  The hills of our town, the terraced stone housing with their slate roof's and those chimney stacks.  Ah! the nostalgia not withstanding those soggy damp  cold days. Happy happy days. Helen David Woolongong Australia 12/11/2009

I just love this painting David; the gleaming, wet slate and the depth and balance of this composition just draws me in. (Jane Beaumont from Southampton)

Jane Beaumont (11/11/2009)

A very evocative piece of art!  David Barlow at his best!  This landscape is gritty, even bleak, yet hopeful too...  The man who has missed his appointment will carry on...  There's energy in those smokestacks and in the oncoming train with its billowing smokestack -- life breaking through in spite of the obstacles! From Cathy Walsh, Milton, Massachusetts, USA
